Occupational Therapy Role

It is not uncommon for people to ask “what is OT?” or “what does an OT help with?”

Well, let me share with you a few reasons why Occupational Therapy could be for you. Occupational Therapists can support and promote development within the following areas:

  • Implementing effective daily routines  (eg. getting ready for school in the mornings)

  • Encouraging participation in everyday activities 

  • Development of play and social skills (eg. winning and losing, turn taking and encouraging others to achieve)

  • School readiness and transitions 

  • Attention and concentration 

  • Planning and organisation  

  • Confidence to participate within the community (eg. going to the shops, to the playground or to events)

  • Supporting emotional regulation  and strategies (encouraging to use positive ways to deal with emotions)

  • Supporting sensory preferences and strategies

  • Independence in self-care tasks (eg. dressing, toileting, mealtimes)

  • Sleep strategies and management (such as settling to sleep, or night time routines)

  • Gross motor skills (including strength and coordination) 

  • Fine motor skills (such as pre-writing, handwriting, shoe laces, cutlery use)
